Admissions FAQ

Why an interview?

Providence regards the interview as a very important step in the admissions process.  The school is looking for like-minded families who share the same view of the child and similar educational philosphy, methods and goals.

Why interview parents and students?

Providence is not just admitting a student when it enrolls a child.  It is admitting a family.  Families have character.  Children reflect the character of their family, particularly that of their parents.  In maintaining the bond of peace through a spirit of unity Providence desires godly families committed to biblical standards of fellowship and discipline within the household among family members.  Families built upon, and sustained by, adherence to biblical standards of fellowship are best equipped to biblically interact among other believers in a school and classroom setting and the world at large in a consistently godly fashion.  To assess this quality the Providence administrator interviews both parents and the enrolling student.  In particular, the school seeks students who demonstrate a high level of respect for, and obedience toward, their parents and who indicate they are also capable of demonstrating diligence, patience, and perseverance in the classroom as well as a love for their neighbor (schoolmates) by godly self-control. Students are expected to participate in the interview as required by the interviewer by sitting properly, completing the assessment test, and responding appropriately and respectfully to the interviewer's questions.  If children do not demonstrate godly attitudes toward their parents, the interviewer, and the interview process, it is unlikely they will properly demonstrate them toward their teachers, classmates or their school work in general.

What does the interview look like?

The admission interview takes place with both parents present (or at least one parent when the family is a single parent family). The family and administrator sit and discuss various standard questions such as,

  1. Why do you want to enroll your children at Providence Classical Christian School?
  2. What role do parents play in the education of their children?
  3. How important is the Word of God in your household?
  4. What is your philosophy of discipline?

Apart from the assessment test students will be asked questions such as,

  1. Do you want to attend Providence? Why? Why not?
  2. What kind of books do you like to read (or have read to you)?
  3. What are your most and least favorite subjects?
  4. Who is Jesus? Why is He important?
  5. Are you prepared to work hard to honor you father, mother, and the Lord by your diligence?
  6. How does God want you to behave toward your parents? Your teachers?

What does the assessment test consist of?

The assessment test involves age-appropriate reading, writing, and mathematics exercises.

Reading:

Students will be given a passage from an age-appropriate book to read.  Kindergarten and first grade students will be asked to identify letters and sounds of the alphabet and read appropriate words or stories, if capable.

Writing:

Students will be required to write about their favorite character or event in history or literature.  Very young students will be asked to demonstrate their penmanship, letter and number formation, and name writing skills on paper.

Mathematics:

This part of the assessment test involves the students solving problems appropriate to their level of ability.  These problems involve simple number recognition, addition and subtraction for very young children.  For students in second through twelfth grade, math problems are chosen from the text of the grade prior to the one in which they are enrolling.

How long does an interview normally take?

A standard interview normally takes about an hour to an hour and a half.

When will we know how we did?

After the interview and assessment test process is completed the administrator presents his data and impressions to the Providence School Board.  The board asks any necessary clarifying questions and makes a recommendation back to the administrator.  The Providence School Board is the final arbiter in the admission process.  This process may take up to one week to complete.

What do we do once accepted?

Upon your approval for admission to Providence you will be required to complete and submit a registration form along with a deposit check for $250.00 securing your child's placement.  The deposit is applied to your first month's tuition and is required on a per family, not a per student basis.

You will then receive all pertinent information from the school such as the school calendar, uniform policy, student emergency form, and school supplies list.  You will also receive regular e-mail updates informing you of any new or changing information regarding school preparations for the new school year.  You should also regularly log on to the Providence website at www.pccs.org for more general information helpful to keep you informed about school events and goings-on.

Can we reapply if we are denied?

Certainly.  However, it is advisable for families to assess their readiness and the school's goodness of fit for them before doing so.

Can we appeal a decision denying our admission?

Yes.  You simply need to write a letter of appeal to the Providence School Board providing your name, child's name, date of interview, grade applying for, and an explanation of your position in detail.  The board will then review your appeal and contact you with their decision.
