The basic building block for the structure of classical education is the Trivium. The Trivium is a model that deals with the method and organization of education. The three stages of the Trivium consist of Grammar, Dialectic, and Rhetoric.
The first stage, Grammar, focuses on the fundamental rules of each subject. The second stage, Dialectic, emphasizes the ordered relationship of particulars in each subject. The final stage, Rhetoric, involves the eloquent communication and expression of the wisdom within each subject. Each stage wonderfully integrates and corresponds to the way God has designed the development of our children. Classical education also incorporates specific courses in classical language study (Latin and Greek), logic, and rhetoric. In addition, primary and older sources of knowledge are regarded highly and utilized regularly in the educational process. The purpose of the Trivium is to equip the students with the tools of learning within and across the subject areas they study.
